Xbox Series S Hardware Challenges Delay Black Myth: Wukong Release, Developer Confirms
Xbox fans have become accustomed to feeling overlooked when it comes to console games, as developers are increasingly more inclined to prioritize PlayStation, with Xbox versions often arriving later. Titles such as Stellar Blade, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Rise of the Ronin, and Silent Hill 2 from 2024 are examples of third-party games that skipped Xbox for various reasons. However, it was the delay of Black Myth: Wukong on Xbox that generated the most backlash.
While it's known that Black Myth: Wukong will eventually release on Xbox, its version has faced an indefinite delay. Many speculated that the weaker hardware of the Xbox Series S might be the culprit, though developer Game Science never confirmed this. Speculation ran wild, with some suggesting that PlayStation might have secured an exclusive deal, fueled by a controversial statement from Microsoft.
Now, after more than four months since the game's release on PlayStation and PC, we have an official explanation for the delay. Feng Ji, the director of Black Myth: Wukong (also known as Yocar), addressed the issue in a recent post on the Chinese social media platform Weibo.
In response to the game's success at the Steam Awards, where it won three awards including Game of the Year, Yocar expressed his emotional reaction to the achievements. He also acknowledged that the only thing missing from an otherwise perfect year was the Xbox version of the game. Yocar explained that the 10GB shared memory of the Xbox Series S made it impossible to release the game on the platform "without a few years of optimization experience."
This statement essentially dismisses rumors of a secret PlayStation deal and confirms the widely held belief that the Series S's hardware limitations are causing significant challenges for developers. Game Science is not alone in facing difficulties with the Series S. For instance, Dune Awakening developer Funcom described working with the system as "a challenge," while a former developer from Naughty Dog and Rocksteady expressed regret over the existence of the console. Even Baldur's Gate 3 developer Larian had to abandon split-screen features to make the game run on the Series S, underscoring the issues developers face with the system.
