What is ONDC and How It Works — Beginner Guide

The digital commerce landscape in India is evolving rapidly, and one of the most promising developments in recent years is the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). As e-commerce continues to dominate retail, small businesses, startups, and even local kirana stores are often left dependent on big tech platforms to reach customers. ONDC is a government-backed initiative designed to change that, creating a level playing field for sellers and more options for consumers. But what exactly is ONDC, and how does it work? This guide will break it down for beginners in a simple, easy-to-understand way.

For years, this has been the simple, unchangeable truth of e-commerce.

Until now.

There’s a quiet revolution happening in India’s digital landscape, a change as massive and foundational as UPI was for payments. It’s called ONDC, and it’s here to tear down those walls.

If you’ve heard the term “ONDC” but felt confused, you’re not alone. Is it a new app? Is it a government store? Is it another e-commerce giant?

The simple answer is no, no, and no.

This guide will break it all down. We’ll explore what ONDC is, why it’s a game-changer, and how it will fundamentally change the way you buy and sell online.

So, What is ONDC?

Let’s get the official name out of the way: ONDC stands for Open Network for Digital Commerce.

Now, let’s forget the jargon.

At its heart, ONDC is not an app or a platform. It is a set of rules — a common language — that allows different apps and platforms to talk to each other.

Think about UPI. Before UPI, if you had an HDFC Bank account, you had to use the HDFC app. Your friend with an ICICI account had to use the ICICI app. Sending money between them was a pain.

Then, UPI came along. UPI is a protocol (a common language) that lets any app (like Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm) talk to any bank (like HDFC, ICICI, or SBI). Suddenly, you could use your favorite app to pay anyone, regardless of what app or bank they used. It connected everyone.

ONDC is doing for e-commerce what UPI did for payments.

It’s a government-backed initiative designed to create one giant, open marketplace where any buyer can find any seller, no matter what app they are both using. It’s a network that links them all.

How ONDC Actually Works (The Simple Version)
The big question is: how does this all connect?

The current system is “platform-centric.” If a seller wants to sell products on three different major marketplaces, they have to create three separate accounts, upload their product catalog three times, and manage three different sets of rules and commissions.

ONDC creates a “network-centric” model. It works by connecting three key players:

Buyer Apps: These are the apps you, the consumer, already have and use. Think of apps like Paytm, PhonePe, and many others that are becoming ONDC-enabled.

Seller Apps: These are the platforms that sellers use to list their products and manage their inventory. A small kirana store, a local restaurant, or a large brand can list their products on any ONDC-compatible seller app.

The ONDC Gateway: This is the magic “translator” in the middle. It takes the seller’s product information from the seller app and makes it visible on all the buyer apps.

A Step-by-Step Example:
Let’s see how this works in real life.

Meet Priya: Priya is a shopkeeper in Pune. She sells handmade leather bags. She lists her 10 new bag designs on an ONDC-compatible “Seller App” called ‘Mystore’.

Meet Karan: Karan lives in Mumbai and is looking for a new leather bag. He opens his everyday payment app, Paytm (which is a “Buyer App” on the ONDC network).

The Search: Karan searches for “handmade leather bag.”

The Magic: Because both Priya’s ‘Mystore’ app and Karan’s ‘Paytm’ app are connected to the ONDC network, Priya’s bags show up directly in Karan’s search results on Paytm. He sees her bags right alongside sellers who might have listed their products on other seller apps.

The Purchase: Karan loves one of the bags and buys it directly through his Paytm app.

The Fulfilment: ONDC’s network doesn’t just handle the listing; it also connects to logistics partners. It pings a nearby delivery service, which picks up the bag from Priya and delivers it to Karan.

Priya, the seller, got a new customer from Mumbai without ever having to register on Paytm. Karan, the buyer, found a unique product from a small seller he never would have discovered, all without ever leaving his preferred app.

That is the power of ONDC. It unbundles the e-commerce process — discovery, ordering, payment, and logistics — and makes it all interoperable.

How to Start Using ONDC
This is the best part. It’s simpler than you think, but there’s a common point of confusion we need to clear up first.

You cannot “download the ONDC app,” because one doesn’t exist.

You access the ONDC network through the apps you already use.

For Buyers (Consumers)
You’ve probably already got ONDC in your pocket. To start shopping:

Open Your Existing Apps: Go to apps like Paytm or PhonePe.

Find the ONDC Section: Look for a new shopping section. In Paytm, you might see “Paytm ONDC.” In PhonePe, you might find it under “Pincode.”

Just Search: Start searching for products — groceries, food, fashion, etc.

See the Difference: You’ll notice products from local sellers, kirana stores, and businesses you’ve never seen on the big marketplaces. The prices may also be surprisingly competitive, as sellers often pay lower commissions on ONDC.

That’s it. You are now shopping on the Open Network. You can buy groceries, order food (ONDC food delivery is a fast-growing category), or shop for fashion, all from one place.

For Sellers (Businesses)
This is where the revolution truly hits home. If you’re a small business owner, a local retailer, or a D2C brand, ONDC is your megaphone.

Don’t Go to a Buyer App: You don’t register on Paytm or PhonePe.

Find a “Seller App Partner”: You need to register with a platform that is an ONDC-compatible seller app (like the ‘Mystore’ example earlier).

List Your Products Once: You upload your product catalog, set your prices, and define your service areas on this one seller app.

Become Visible Everywhere: Instantly, your products become discoverable to every single consumer on every single buyer app that is part of the ONDC network.

This is a complete reversal of power. Sellers are no longer dependent on a single, giant platform. They gain a level playing field, wider reach, and more control over their business.

The Future of ONDC in India
Mark these words: ONDC is set to become one of the most inclusive and transformative digital ecosystems in the world.

Think about the millions of small kirana stores, local artisans, farmers, and family-run restaurants that are the backbone of India’s economy. For many, the technical barriers and high commissions of existing marketplaces were simply too much.

ONDC removes those barriers.
